How will I know when baby is ready?
As a general rule, your baby is ready when she is:
- sitting up by herself
- starting to teethe
- has begun to grasp objects (a behavioral milestone!)
- when baby can eat a range of single-variety items and allergies are not an issue
What about variety?
Give your baby plenty of variety — let her try all From About 6 Months varieties. In particular, try plenty of fruits and vegetables, which you'd naturally want to interest baby. Be sure to add From About 6 Months dinners to provide baby with adequate protein. Juices make a nice treat for baby, but take care to limit intake at this stage to 4-6 ounces per day to keep baby's diet balanced.
From About 6 Months Feeding Tips
Color Me Nourished! One way to gauge appropriate variety is natural food color — the more colors on your child’s plate, the better. Not only are you keeping her interest, but each color represents a specific antioxidant important to your baby’s development.
Don’t be afraid to reintroduce a food that baby had rejected earlier on. It takes time for little taste buds to develop and those peas that were not welcomed a few weeks ago might become the new dinnertime favorite tomorrow!
Look to baby’s appetite for cues. If she polishes off a whole jar and still seems hungry, don’t be afraid to feed her some more! Babies will stop when they are satisfied; like everything else about them, babies’ appetites are growing rapidly too.
